The town centre businesses of Putaruru and Tokoroa, through their business promotion organisations, Pride in Putaruru (PIP) and Tokoroa – A Naturally Growing Success (TANGS), along with community organisations in Arapuni, Tirau and Atiamuri, manage retail and other promotional programmes in their respective areas of interest. In addition, PIP and TANGS participate in District-wide promotions. The scope of activity undertaken benefits not only the immediate business area, but also the wider community. Council collects funds to finance the activities of PIP and TANGS through the rating system, both through a Ward targeted rate and a targeted rate on the businesses involved. The proposal complies with the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002. Council acknowledges the contribution of the Tirau Business Association (“TBA”) in promoting Tirau businesses.
Support from business people for the collection of the targeted rate requires the approval of a strong majority of the ratepayers within the rateable areas concerned.
